Thrush Treatment

WHAT CAUSES THRUSH?

Treatment delivered to your door

Thrush is caused by a yeast overgrowth, but infection can be triggered by a number of different factors.

In most cases, vaginal thrush can be treated with antifungal medications. Some women may experience recurrent thrush, and other treatments may be necessary in these cases.

Common causes for thrush

Vaginal thrush (also known as vulvovaginal candidiasis) is caused by an overgrowth of the Candida albicans yeast.

This yeast is usually present in the vagina in small amounts. When it multiplies, it can cause an imbalance in the vaginal microbiome – what we know as thrush.

Common causes of thrush include hormonal changes, taking certain antibiotics, and some health conditions, such as diabetes or a weakened immune system.

Topical Treatment

Antibiotic use

Antibiotics are a common cause of vaginal thrush. As well as fighting infection, antibiotics kill both bad and good bacteria in the vaginal microbiome. This can lead to an overgrowth of yeast, which may cause symptoms of vaginal itching, burning and discharge. Antibiotics can also disrupt the natural balance of the vagina, which makes the area more susceptible to thrush.

If you are taking antibiotics and develop thrush, it is important to speak with your medical team about treatment options. In some cases, you may be able to take a course of antifungal medication at the same time as the antibiotics. Sometimes it may be necessary to stop taking antibiotics to clear up the thrush.

Diabetes

Diabetes is another common cause of vaginal thrush. This is due to the high blood sugar levels providing an ideal environment for yeast to grow. Women with diabetes are also more likely to have other health conditions that make them more susceptible to yeast infections, including obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol

Hormonal changes

Several different hormonal changes can cause vaginal thrush. The most common hormonal changes occur during pregnancy when increased levels of estrogen cause the body to produce more sugar, which may then feed the yeast that causes thrush. Other hormonal changes that cause thrush include taking the contraceptive pill, menopause, or hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

The immune system and stress

A weakened immune system is often caused by stress, so it’s not surprising that vaginal thrush is more common during periods of stress. When the body is under pressure, it produces more cortisol hormone. This can disrupt the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina and allow the yeast that causes thrush to flourish. If you’re experiencing vaginal thrush, it’s important to talk to your doctor about ways to reduce stress and strengthen your immune system.
