Complications of high blood pressure
If you’re experiencing symptoms associated with elevated blood pressure it is essential that you seek medical advice.
When left unmanaged, high blood pressure can cause further health complications, including heart disease and stroke.
The recommended treatment protocol for managing high blood pressure will vary with the severity and needs of each patient.
Checking your blood pressure is a simple, non-invasive process that could very well save your life.
Treatment for high blood pressure
In Australia, approximately 34% of adults have been diagnosed with hypertension. Recommended prescription blood pressure medication includes:
- Thiazide
- ACE Inhibitor
- ARB (receptor blocker)
- Beta-blocker
- Calcium channel blocker
After reviewing your patient profile and most recent blood pressure recordings, a member of the hub.health medical team may prescribe you a combination of the following prescription treatment options, which are pharmacologically complementary.
Thiazide or thiazide-like diuretic
Thiazide diuretics are a standard treatment for high blood pressure that promotes natriuresis and diuresis. This drug inhibits the reabsorption of luminal sodium and may also be used to clear fluid from the body or minimise ongoing fluid retention.
ACEI
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, more commonly known as ACE inhibitors, are used to relax the arteries and veins to assist in lowering blood pressure.
ARB
Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) offer similar effects to those seen with prescribed ACE inhibitors.
Although the results are often similar, ARBs work by a different mechanism and are often prescribed to patients who have difficulty tolerating ACE inhibitors. ARBs increase blood flow throughout the body and widen vessels, resulting in lower blood pressure readings.
Beta-blocker
Beta-blockers are an effective treatment for numerous health conditions, including Hypertension, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, migraines and anxiety.
For patients with Hypertension, beta blockers are prescribed to limit the effects of the hormone epinephrine, which causes the heart to beat more slowly, resulting in lowered blood pressure.
Dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker
Calcium channel antagonists, such as Dihydropyridine, cause dilation of the arteries and have proven to be effective in the treatment of Hypertension and angina.
