Rosacea FAQs
What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a common chronic skin condition that occurs when tiny blood vessels on the skin’s surface (capillaries) enlarge and break to cause inflammation, redness, and the appearance of flushing.
What are the symptoms of rosacea?
Common symptoms of rosacea include:
- Frequent blushing, flushing, or redness on cheeks, chin, forehead, and/or nose
- Persistent redness that looks like sunburn
- Visible blood vessels on the face
- Skin thickening, particularly around the nose area
- Pimples or bumps on the face
- Burning or stinging sensations on the face
- Red, irritated, or swollen eyelids
- Rough, dry skin
What causes rosacea?
The exact cause of rosacea is undetermined. It may be caused by a combination or hereditary and environmental factors.
What can trigger rosacea?
Factors that can trigger symptoms of rosacea include sun exposure, hot weather, stress, alcohol, spicy foods, hot baths, saunas, exercise, certain skin care products, and certain medications.
Rosacea triggers will differ from person to person. You may find it beneficial to keep a diary to help identify what triggers your rosacea.
Can rosacea appear anywhere on the body?
Rosacea is an inflammatory condition that exclusively affects the face. However, in some cases people may experience symptoms on their ears, eyes, neck, upper back, and chest.
How is rosacea treated?
Since the symptoms of rosacea vary for each person, personalised treatment must be prescribed by a medical professional on a case-by-case basis. Depending on severity of symptoms, a range of oral and topical medications can be used to treat redness and control flare ups. Long-term anti-inflammatory therapy may be prescribed to maintain remission. Laser therapies and lifestyle modifications may also be recommended.
Can rosacea be cured?
Unfortunately, there’s no cure for rosacea, however the condition is manageable with appropriate treatments prescribed by a doctor or skin specialist.
